My Mother Couldn’t Get a Credit Card

For the first five years of my back-to-school shopping life, my mother took us to The Bon Marché in downtown Seattle, picked out an armful of only partially child-approved clothing, and paid for the shopping trip with a store credit card. That credit card was in my father’s name.
